Hydrogen Storage in Severely Deformed Magnesium Based Alloys

Powder processing is a common method for the processing of hydrogen storage alloys. The powder processing leads two structural modifications; particle fragmentation and straining. In the current work an alternative processing technique is employed in which particle fragementation is avoided. For this purpose Mg based alloys are deformed via equal channel angular pressing to a relatively heavy strain and their hydrogenation properties are characterized.

Tooling used in equal channel angular pressing of Mg based alloys. Via repeted passage of sample through this die, it is possible to reach true strain values in excess of 5. This is with the result of substantial refinement of microıstructure down to sub-micron or nanometer range.

Microstructure in ECAPed Mg-Ti. Though phase make-up appears to be rather coarse, the cell size in each phase is extremely small, i.e. 20 and 25 nm.
