Microwave Sintering of Alumina and Silicon Nitride Based Bulk Ceramics
Supervisor: Dr. Arcan F. DERİCİOĞLU
During last decade, microwave processing of ceramics has gained much more attention. Reasons for the growing interest in the use of microwave energy in ceramics industry include rapid heating, enhanced densification rate and improved gained microstructure. Microwave heating also has the potential for cost savings relative to the conventional heating systems, which is directly related to decreased activation energy requirement of microwave sintering. The purpose of this work is to study the microwave sintering of ceramics in order to investigate the effect of processing parameters on the properties of the final products as well as to understand and analyze active mechanisms and problems related to microwave sintering. In this study, various combinations of sintering temperatures and sintering times will be examined under different sintering atmospheres to observe the effectiveness of microwave sintering on densification, microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of some widely used monolithic ceramics.
