The Effect of Hot-Deformation on Mechanical Properties of
Al-Mg-Si Based Wrought Aluminum Alloys
Supervisor: Dr. Bilgehan ÖGEL
Microstructural and mechanical characterization of heat treatable 6xxx (Al-Mg-Si-Cu based) wrought aluminum alloys was under study. As received Al alloy rods were processed by a series of hot and cold deformation and subsequently subjected to precipitation hardening. The aim of this work is to produce fine grained, high strength 6xxx series aluminum alloy by adjusting processing conditions; deformation, solutionizing and ageing.
6xxx (Al-Si-Mg-Cu) series heat treatable alloy derives its strength from the precipitation hardening phase, Mg2Si. Investigations showed that; obtaining homogeneously distributed precipitates in fine grain sized aluminum matrix is a must. The presence of gray, script like complex precipitates near black Mg2Si can be seen from SEM micrograph of hot deformed 6xxx alloy.
