Production of High Porosity Titanium
Using Carbamide As Space Holder Material
Supervisor: Dr. Þakir BOR
The present study is undertaken to investigate the production methods of high porosity, biocompatible pure titanium by powder metallurgy employing spherical carbamide particles as space holder. Spherical carbamide particles of 1.2-0.3mm size were covered with irregular >45 µm high purity Ti powders. They were pressed and proper heat treatment to remove the space holder was carried out followed by sintering at temperatures between 1000-1200°C. All heat treatments were carried out at atmosphere controlled furnaces using high purity argon gas.
Open cellular Ti foam with 68% porosity and having pore size of 300-600µm to be used in bone replacements. In most studies pore size range of 200-600µm in porous Ti is regarded as the optimum for the ingrowth of bone through the cells.
