Tungsten Production by Electro-Deoxidation
Supervisor: Dr. İshak KARAKAYA
There has been some effort to produce tungsten by electrolytic reduction. Among various electrolytic methods, reduction of tungsten compounds in molten salt electrolytes seems to be promising. Thermodynamic computations and experimental studies were performed to shed some light over this method. Experimental studies will involve the direct electrochemical reduction of tungsten compounds in molten salt mixtures containing CaCl2 as the major component at temperatures higher than 600oC. Reduced samples will be characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and other relevant analysis methods.
(a)Direct reduction of tungsten oxides; view of electrolysis setup and schematic representation of cell. Electrolysis is conducted between the graphite rod anode and the tungsten compound cathode at temperatures higher than 600oC. Early results indicated that metallic tungsten could be produced by the electrochemical reduction of the tungsten compounds.
(b)X-Ray diffraction spectrum of the one of the reduced samples, after ten hours electrolysis and separation processes. It consists of one phase; tungsten.
