Heat Treatment and Characterization of Aluminum Matrix Composites
Supervisor: Dr. Bilgehan ÖGEL
Aluminum matrix composites with different volume fractions of reinforcement can be produced in the Powder Metallurgy Laboratory. The effect of volume fraction and heat treatment on mechanical properties can be investigated using various facilities in our department. The Powder Metallurgy Research Group is also involved in the field of metal foam production and metal forming processes.
Microstructure of Al-B4C composite produced by hot pressing. Densification in this composite has been achieved by liquid phase sintering.

The effect of aging at 175ºC on composites containing 0-40 vol.% B4C. Higher hardness values are obtained with the addition of B4C. Accelerated ageing can be observed in the composites containing higher volume fractions of reinforcement.
